Introduction: To evaluate the efficacy of the concurrent use of objective and subjective measures of overtraining syndrome in Pahlavani wrestlers.
Methods: Thirty professional Pahlavani wrestlers participated in this study. One week before beginning the official training program lasting for three months, serum levels of Testosterone, Cortisol, TNF-α, and IL-6 were measured. The Société Francaise de Médicine du Sport Questionnaire (SFMS-Q) was also implemented at this stage. In the middle and also at the end of this period, all these variables were measured again.
Results: The serum levels of Cortisol, TNF-α, and IL-6, as well as the score of the SFMS-Q were significantly higher, and serum levels of Testosterone was significantly lower at the end of the training program compared to the pre-test (p<0.05). Also, there were positive correlations between the SFMS-Q scores and Cortisol (p = 0.001), TNF-α (p = 0.022), and IL-6 (p = 0.001) at the end of the season. A negative correlation was also observed between the SFMS-Q score and the Testosterone at the end of the training program (p = 0.016).
Conclusion: There is a possibility of shifting toward the overtraining syndrome as a result of Pahlavani wrestling-specific training. Also, it seems that subjective measures of overtraining are more sensitive to change in training load and could be used to detect overtraining syndromes at early stages. Finally, the concurrent use of objective and subjective measures of overtraining in a longitudinal approach could be an effective way to prevent the overtraining syndrome.
