Abstract

Introduction: The purpose of this research was to compare the effects of resistance training, and sprint interval training along , and saffron extract on the cardiovascular indicators of the elderly.

Method: In this semi-experimental research 30 elderly people over 65 years old as a research sample were divided into three groups: resistance training + saffron supplement; sprint-interval-group + saffron supplement and the control group. The resistance training group performed eight weeks of the resistance training program; sprint-interval group performed eight weeks the sprint-interval training program, and the control group did their daily activities during this period. Subjects in the supplement groups received 3 mg/kg body weight of saffron three times a day for eight weeks. Before and at the end of the intervention, the blood pressure,VO2max, and resting heart rate of the participants were measured. The research data were analyzed at a significance level of 0.05 and analyzed by variance analysis with repeated measurements.

Findings: Eight weeks of resistance training with the consumption of saffron extract and eight weeks of sprint-interval training with the consumption of saffron extract have no significant effect on resting heart rate, VO2max and systolic blood pressure in elderly people, and there is no significant difference between the effect of RT and IST with the consumption of saffron extract on resting heart rate, VO2max and systolic blood pressure in elderly people.

Conclusion: Longer training periods are probably needed in order to benefit from the benefits of two methods of resistance and intermittent speed training along with saffron Supplements.
